AquaQi FAQs

Questions are part of discovering something new.

AquaQi does not behave exactly like ordinary swimwear, conventional fins or a rigid monofin.

Here are the practical answers — from fit and first use to swimming, freediving, travel, care and HydroFlow training.

The Basics

Start here.

What exactly is AquaQi?

AquaQi is a soft fabric-based aquatic movement system worn from the waist and extending beyond the feet. Both legs move inside the fabric, creating a flexible fin-like surface that interacts with the water as the swimmer moves.

Is AquaQi a monofin?

AquaQi shares some movement ideas with monofin swimming, especially connected-leg movement and body wave, but it does not use a rigid blade.

Its working surface is made from soft fabric and begins much higher on the body, around the hips and legs.

Why does AquaQi extend beyond the feet?

The additional fabric beyond the toes is intentional. It completes the soft working surface and helps the trailing end of the system remain more controlled as water moves around and behind the swimmer.

Is AquaQi just a long swimming skirt?

No. The fit, fabric width, adjustable waist, diagonal opening, leg area and extended trailing section are designed so the fabric can become a controlled working surface rather than simply loose material around the legs.

HydroFlow

AquaQi is something you learn by feeling.

The fabric changes tension as the swimmer moves. Different leg positions, body waves and changes in direction create different sensations through the skirt.

The fabric does not tell you what to do. It helps you feel what the water is doing.

Swimming & Training

How do I swim with it?

What swimming movement works best with AquaQi?

Dolphin-style body wave is one of the most natural ways to explore AquaQi because the movement can travel from the upper body through the core, hips, legs and fabric.

AquaQi can also be incorporated into freestyle, back movement, butterfly exploration, vertical drills and other connected aquatic movement.

Can I use AquaQi for freestyle?

Yes. Swimmers can combine conventional freestyle upper-body movement with AquaQi through the lower body to explore alignment, hip movement, kick control and rhythm.

What about breaststroke?

Breaststroke is not the natural stroke for AquaQi because its wide circular leg action conflicts with the shared fabric structure around both legs. AquaQi is better suited to movements where the legs can work together within the fabric.

Can a coach use AquaQi as a training prop?

Yes. AquaQi can give swimmers another environment for exploring alignment, kick amplitude, dolphin kick, rhythm, body wave and core-to-leg coordination.

It does not automatically correct technique or replace coaching. Instead, it adds physical feedback that a coach can use alongside instruction.

Is AquaQi only a training tool?

No. It can be used as a swim-training prop, but HydroFlow can also become the activity itself — including body-wave swimming, vertical movement, slow flow, directional movement and dedicated AquaQi sessions.

First Session

Start slow enough to understand the fabric.

We recommend beginning in calm, controlled water where standing or reaching support is easy.

Learn the orientation, quick release and walking position on land first. Then begin near a wall with your feet still free before extending AquaQi fully over the toes.

Fit & Sizing

AquaQi is designed to adjust.

How tight should AquaQi feel?

The waist should feel secure without being unnecessarily tight. The diagonal right-leg opening should also sit smoothly, with the overlapping lower fabric tucked neatly beneath the upper section.

Why do AquaQi sizes overlap?

The adjustable design allows compatible users to fit more than one size in some cases. Different fits may also create somewhat different fabric tension and HydroFlow characteristics.

Where can I find my size?

Use the AquaQi Size Guide before ordering.

Standing & Walking

Sleeve it up. Free your feet.

Can I walk while wearing AquaQi?

Yes, but first sleeve the fabric upward so the feet and lower legs are free. Do not walk or stand on loose AquaQi fabric.

What should I do before using pool or boat ladders?

Pull the skirt completely upward beneath the belt before climbing, or remove AquaQi while still in the water and carry it out by hand.

Can I stand with AquaQi covering my feet?

No. Sleeve the fabric above the feet first so the soles make direct contact with the surface. This improves control and helps protect the fabric.

Freediving

A soft option for depth, travel and body-wave movement.

Freedivers can use AquaQi as another propulsion and movement system alongside conventional fins or a monofin.

Explore AquaQi for Freediving
Can AquaQi replace my freediving fins?

It does not need to. AquaQi can be your primary system for a session, a different training experience, or a compact backup or additional option alongside the fins you already use.

Can I put AquaQi on while already in the water?

Yes. Practice first in calm water. Holding the waist open and gently moving the skirt through the water can help the fabric fill and straighten before inserting the legs. The bright internal marker helps confirm orientation.

Can I use AquaQi with a weight belt?

Become fully comfortable swimming, standing, releasing and removing AquaQi before adding weight systems or more demanding freediving equipment. Use equipment appropriate to your experience and diving practices.

Aquatic Movement & Flow

Does AquaQi need speed?

Can AquaQi be used for slow or meditative movement?

Yes. AquaQi can also be explored through stillness, floating, slow body waves, rotation, spirals and subtle water movement. At lower speeds, the fabric can become more about sensation and awareness than propulsion.

Can I practice vertically?

Yes. Vertical HydroFlow allows the swimmer to stay almost in place while practicing hip and spinal waves and feeling the fabric load and release. A suitable float may be used for support.

Can AquaQi be used in aquatic yoga or guided relaxation?

AquaQi can be incorporated into guided aquatic movement, supported floating and slow-flow sessions.

Some users may also appreciate the soft lower-body coverage during guided water work.

Travel

Folds small. Travels easily.

AquaQi has no long rigid blade, so it can fold into a compact space for travel, pool sessions and keeping as an additional water option.

Dry it completely before folding and storing.

Safety

Use it with the same respect you give the water.

Is AquaQi a flotation device?

No. AquaQi is not a flotation device, life-saving device or substitute for swimming ability. Never rely on it for rescue or personal flotation.

Is AquaQi a toy or costume?

No. AquaQi is designed as an aquatic movement and training system. Use it in suitable water conditions and within your swimming or freediving ability.

Can I jump into the water while wearing AquaQi?

Avoid jumping into the water while AquaQi is fully worn. A strong entry can place unnecessary force on the fabric and can cause the skirt to shift upward around the body. Use a controlled entry and place AquaQi into its full swimming position once settled in the water.

Where should beginners practice?

Begin in calm, controlled water where you can easily stand or reach support. Become comfortable with fit, movement and the quick release before progressing to deeper, open or more demanding water.

Fabric & Care

Protect the softness.

What can I wear underneath AquaQi?

AquaQi can be worn over swimwear, swim tights or a close-fitting freediving or diving suit. Check for sharp buckles, clips, exposed zipper parts or other hardware that may rub against the fabric.

Can I use AquaQi around rocks or reef?

Avoid close contact with sharp rocks, reef, coral and rough surfaces. AquaQi is a soft fabric system and should be kept away from surfaces or equipment that may cut, puncture or repeatedly abrade the material.

How should I wash AquaQi?

Rinse thoroughly by hand with fresh water after use. Do not use a washing machine, bleach, iron or tumble dryer.

How should I dry and store it?

Allow AquaQi to dry completely in the shade, away from sharp hooks or abrasive surfaces. Once fully dry, fold loosely and store in a clean, dry place away from prolonged direct sunlight.

Coaches, Clubs & Instructors

Can I teach with AquaQi?

Yes. AquaQi can be incorporated into swim coaching, freediving programs, aquatic movement sessions, trial events and dedicated HydroFlow classes.
